Bennato has been a key figure in reviving and modernising Italian folk music, especially Taranta music, combining it with rock, folk and world music. His music often deals with social and political themes such as poverty, immigration, and the history of southern Italy.
Born in Naples, Bennato began his music career in the late 1960s. In 1969, he founded the band Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare, one of the pioneers of the revival of Italian folk music. Bennato, who went solo in the 1970s, has released dozens of successful albums, performed extensively around the world and won numerous awards for his music.
